Nails Inc: Gel Effect polish review

I bought these as a travel set - the packaging is slightly different to the full size versions.
I'm not the biggest nail varnish fan to start with. I rarely buy it as I used to just go to salon to get my nails done instead but a few years ago I went on a week long course so that I could learn the basics in applying nail extensions and painting them, this just meant that I could do my own and wouldn't need to pay to get them done any more. I did my own nails for a while, even getting a little UV light so I could do my own gel polishes, but if I'm completely honest I just can't be bothered - gel and acrylics just take so much time and effort to do and remove.

These Nail Inc polishes are supposed to look like a gel manicure, whilst still being as simple and easy to apply/remove as a normal polish. This suits me perfectly and I was eager to try them out.

Buy the set here. (Original set comes with 6 polishes but I lost one - oops!)

The darkest shade in the collection is called Victoria and is described as a 'deep cherry' on the Nails Inc website. Personally I think this shade has strong purple undertones but with a couple of layers this colour is really beautiful. It's like a deep black-red.

The first colour in this set that I tried was the Beaufort Street as I'm boring and safe and will often just wear a red because it looks pretty and matches most things in my wardrobe. I didn't realise until I had actually applied this that this shade was definitely more on the pink side than red. Nails Inc describe this shade as 'Winter Raspberry' which is a very good description. I'm not that keen on magneta/bright pink shades so this isn't one I would wear again.

The next shade is Little Brick Lane and is described as a russet colour. Again, that's a pretty true description. Little Brick Lane is a reddish/brown antique-y sort of colour (I'm brilliant at describing colours, huh?) and looks really pretty for Autumn as it is the same colour as fallen leaves.

The next shade is Mayfair Lane and it's described as a 'delicate pale pink' and is pretty true to the description. It's one of the lightest shades in this collection and also one of my favourites. It's not the most opaque in the set but can be rectified by just applying an extra coat or two. It's a beautiful nude that will go with most outfits (if you care about nail varnish matching, that is).

The final shade in this little set is called Porchester Square. The Nails Inc website describes it as a 'true nude' but is definitely more of a taupe/brown-ish colour. This is not my favourite of the bunch purely because those types of ashy/stone shades really do not suit my skin type. I have to steer clear of stone coloured lipsticks, eyeshadows, bronzers, blushes, and now apparently nail varnishes. I could imagine this looking really pretty on very dark skin though.

So now to get into the formula (I have worn all of these shades and the formula is the same in all of them)...
These polishes promise an 'ultra glossy, high shine gel effect with no UV lamp or soak off' which sounded absolutely ideal for me. I can't say that I noticed much different in terms of glossiness to my other normal polishes but I'm not claiming that these varnishes were by any means matte or a satin finish, they are definitely high gloss but just nothing extraordinary in comparison to say, the L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche (which are AH-MAZING, definitely check them out. Buy here.)

The biggest problem I had with these was their lasting power. THESE CHIP SO MUCH. I have crappy nails to begin with, they're quite oily so nail polish just slips right off me but these were far worse than anything else I had tried. I literally applied Mayfair Lane on the Sunday night and on the Monday morning when I woke up it was already chipped.

The only plus I had with these was that after I removed the polish my nails felt very soft and shiny, it was almost as if the polish had conditioned my nails.

Nails Inc promised quite a bit with these colours and I was excited, but the wear on them is just ridiculous and such a waste of money. On normal nails I would guess that these will last around a day or so and for £15 a pop it really isn't worth it. I highly recommend you check out a much more affordable brand such as the L'Oreal ones aforementioned.

Have you tried any other Nails Inc colours? How did you find them?

  2. So disappointing that they wear really badly. I tend to get on okay with Nails Inc, but I think Essie are a lot better (not to mention cheaper). Not tried the L'Oreal ones you recommend, but I'll definitely give them a look in next time I head to Boots x Rebecca - itscohen.co.uk

    1. I don't know if it's just the gel effect formula but they were terrible :( I like Essie too but in my opinion the L'oreal ones are amazing, like the best out there for drug store polishes (my favourite polishes ever are the Dior ones) and they're so cheap! Like £5ish a polish. Definitely worth having a look :)

  3. That's so annoying that you woke up and they were already chipped! I hate false advertising. Oh well, thanks for the awesome review!

  4. Thank you so much for an honest review! I personally never tried anything from Nail Inc but judging from the lasting power, I probably never will.

  5. Too bad about the wear on them. They do look lovely. But chipping overnight is a bit much. Bummer!
