What I've learnt in my first month of blogging

As I wrote my first real blog post exactly a month ago today (it was a 'What I Got For Christmas' haul and you can read that here) I thought I would just do a quick bullet point list of what I have learnt in the first month of blogging.

1) Not to compare my work to others.
I'm the worst for this. I look at blogs that are really professional and have been around for years then stress myself out by comparing my work to theirs. I have a £100 point and shoot camera and before I started this blog I had never shot a product photo in my life. I'm obviously not going to be anywhere near the level that they're at and that's ok.

2) Blogging is time consuming.
With the photography, the actual text, making sure my theme and layout is pretty and presentable, planning posts, scheduling posts, setting up and establishing social media, blogging really does take up a lot of my time. I've got into the habit of scheduling posts now for a couple weeks ahead so that if I'm not feeling like writing one day, I don't have to.

3) Photography is complicated.
I thought taking the photos for my blog would be the easy bit, all I have to do is take some pictures, right? This past month I've learnt how complicated it is to actually take photos. I'm really struggling with this as every photo I take I end up hating but it's all a learning curve and I'm slowly (really, really slowly) getting there. I'm hoping when I do the post "What I've Learnt In a Year of Blogging" that I'll have finally taken some photos that I'm proud of.

4) It's not easy to get readers.
I didn't start this blog to get a following or 'get my name out' but if I'm writing content it's kind of nice to get some feedback or to know somebody's actually seen all your hard work. I was lucky as a couple bigger bloggers shared my instagram page and I've ended up getting over 2,400 followers on instagram this past month (which is insane!) but for actual readers on my blog I'm getting around 100 unique views a day. I'm not complaining at all, I actually find it crazy that 100 people a day want to read my stupid ramblings.

5) I don't know anything.
This sounds stupid but this first month everything has been new to me. Cameras, lighting, HTML, bloglovin', ISO, etc. There have been definite days where I've thought I was just crap at everything I do and I've been this close to quitting multiple times but at the end of the day I've grown to love my little space on the web and I'm hoping it's something I'll be doing for years to come. I'm learning that it's just all about practice as every day I feel like I'm improving, even if it's just by a tiny tiny bit.

Thank you for anyone who's read my posts, commented, followed me, etc. It really means the world! Here's to all the other months to come :)

  1. Wow, it sounds like you're off on a great start. I'm a relatively new blogger too, and have discovered a lot of the same things, especially that it's quite the time commitment. But your blog is great and us readers will keep on stopping by!

  3. When I first started blogging, I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. It's very easy to start feeling discouraged, learning all this stuff definitely takes time, but I'm sure that a year from now, you'll be hella proud of how far you've come :)
